It’s All About the Money October 10, 2013

If you ever wondered why graduates and experienced hires are keen to work at the Big 4, let me help. It’s simply the allure of being offered partnership. And why, I hear you ask, is partnership so attractive? Quite simply, the money. An article in the Evening Standard (London) reveals that partners at EY picked up a cool £651,000 for 2012/13. For our friends in the US, that’s a cool $1m, give or take a few dimes. The full article can be read here.

So if money is the motivator, and you don’t mind working all hours god sends, stabbing colleagues in the back, being sycophantic to clients (people of whom you would usually avoid at all costs) and pretending you enjoy the work, you know where to apply…Of course, when you say you are doing it for the mental stimulus, I’ll believe you. 😉

I’ve only met one person who worked from the big 4 and enjoyed it. He was a partner in the tax area.

Every other big 4 person hated it cuz it is a meat market. Great training and a good place to learn the craft if you can stomach the hours (and the rest you mentioned). And good for the resume.

So my advice is to do it for a few years and then get a REAL job in audit.
