Can someone please enlighten me on the role of Risk Managers in Banking? From what I can tell and based on prior experience, not alot! So if someone can tell what they are supposed to be doing, it would be appreciated.

As my limited pool of readers know, I’m not keen to blog these days but I will make an exception. In part, this is a response to ITAudit Security’s leg pull regarding my criticism of Internal Auditors being unprofessional.

This will be a brief quote of the week as you know I can’t be bothered to blog anymore but this is a gem. I had an interview last week; in with the Hiring Manager from Internal Audit and the chap from HR who was doing the HR recruiting. Got to say, very pleasant people. The Hiring Manager was reasonable, explained the role and team set up, expectations, etc. He posed the odd silly question but nothing insurmountable. The HR chap nodded away as we talked about risk management, audit methodology, difficult situations, audits gone wrong, etc.
Eventually the interview wrapped up and I was escorted from the premises by the HR chap. Seeing all the staff sitting in rows under fluorescent light floor after floor didn’t inspire me but still. Anyway, as the HR chap and I walked to the exit, can you guess what he said? (*And no, it wasn’t “here’s my phone number Big Boy”.)
“Most of that went over my head”.
So there you have it, cast iron proof that HR haven’t got a clue about professional* people and their skill-sets in an interview situation and how to evaluate them. Of course, this begs the question, why involve them in the interview process when they can’t (forgive the use of the phrase) ‘add-value’? I will leave it there.
* I use the term loosely where auditors are concerned.

Quite possibly it is. In brief, I’ve had enough of auditing. (more…)

As I mentioned in my previous post, I’ve been quite active on goingconcern.com and the forum. Despite the fact I’m not an external auditor, there’s often some good discussion topics.
