The Competition Commission in the UK has released details of new rules which will force firm’s listed on the FTSE 350 to consider changing their external auditor every five years. An article on this can be found here. This comment on the article caught my eye:

I’ve just stumbled across a ‘job satisfaction survey’ tool, sorry list of questions to ascertain whether I’m happy in my job. So without further ado, I thought I would complete it ‘live on-line’ as a means of sharing and then review the conclusions afterwards.

By popular demand, a post regarding the joys and pain of Internal Auditing.
First a little revelation to set the scene. Audit Monkey’s period of unemployment recently came to an end and I’ve been temping in the back of beyond. The pre-employment bureaucracy has beggared belief. While I have no objection supplying documentation for money laundering purposes, the agency performing the checks also wanted a personal reference.
“Oh please”, everyone knows that employers do not supply personal references as if the former employee proves to be a doughnut in their new employer, a nasty Court action for false representation may ensue, no pun intended.
Pre-employment checks complete, I’ve got to see how another Internal Audit Department operates and as Steve Tyler (he of Aerosmith fame would say), “imagine my surprise!”

The more observant will have noticed I’m on a bit of a ‘blogging’ roll today. Audit Monkey is finding this rather cathartic.
5. Auditing the Impenetrable/Nothing of Value to Audit/Auditing the Bloody Pointless
It’s on the audit plan, there is no escape. Resistance is futile, the audit has your name on it. Yes, we’ve all been there, your manager has requested you audit some obscure system which is materiality insignificant, doesn’t feature on anyone’s risk radar but it has to be done. This said, I occasionally come across the odd gem of an audit finding after exhaustive inquiries but none spring to mind!
